Unfortunately my mom passed away and i'm trying to empty her house so it can be sold. Is there someone in particular that you would recommend for making this easier?

Hi Eileen:

Not sure where you live but outside of getting a referral from someone you know, there is an organization called Professional Organizers that you may be able to find in your area.
I live in Victoria BC so may not be of much help to you.

I had to clean out a 4500 square foot house.......firstly I had asked family to take anything they wanted and being awkward I took the liberty of giving what I thought each would like after a few months took a lot to church sale and then called you got junk, they charged $400 a truckload and got a bargain as alot was new. I looked at it as a time saver at a time when I needed to reflect on the loss of a dear friend. Hope this helps....lesson learned,,,,purge as much as possible it is only stuff that might be dear to you but not to family..............
I was just giving marketing advice to a friend who does staging, organizing and decluttering in the GTA and Niagara Region. "leese@leesedesignstaging.com" Lisa Lockyer

Tell her Cath sent ya.
I had to clean out a family home purchased in 1937.
1) went through it and took anything of sentimental importance. Pictures mostly.
2) offered anything to family members free.
3) held a contents sale on Saturday, advertised for the week preceeding in the local paper.
4) held by appointment visits for people wanting to furnish cottages and rental apartments for free. Used craigslist and Kijiji for both #3 and #4.
5) invited Good Will and the Salvation Army to come and take things.
6) 1-800-Got-Junk took everything else.
I live in Markham Ontario, but mom's house is in Toronto. Thanks for the reply!

Giving away most of the stuff to family and friends. However it's a very small family and most of friends are trying to 'downsize' not add1

I invited Sally Ann to my place the last time I moved.
Two strong guys showed up with a van and as fast as I could point out the items they could have, it was loaded. Very easy way of getting rid of the heavy stuff. LoL! And it doesn't take long because they don't give a rat's @ about scratch 'n dent; - and neither did I.
Thanks!

No the Salvation Army picked up but a good samaritan picked up stuff and took it to Good Will. Generally it was a positive experience. I think most people understand what I was going through.

They also take books and old encyclopedias. I sold the Popular Science and Mechanics collections to a dealer ($1 each) and took a shopping cart full to a recycle book store for a $12 credit. Sallyanne took the rest.

Hi Eileen,
My mother passed away a few years ago and I gave alot of stuff to family and the salavation army.Don't make the mistake I did as alot of her stuff I kept and stood guard on this for several years as it was hard to part with and my house started to look like a home of a hoarder.Sorry about your mom but don"t lose faith...
