(received by email this morning...felt it was worth sharing this perspective)

How long will we put up with this???

This is too true to be funny.

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency put that figure into perspective ...

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no one on earth walked on two feet.

E. A billion dollar $ ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in your brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans ...

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLAR to rebuild New Orleans .

Interesting number...what does it mean?

A. if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(each man, woman, and child) gets $516,528.

B. Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans,
your home gets $1,329,787.

C. Or... if you are a family of four...your family gets $2,066,012.

And I still have to press '1' for English.

This is only the beginning, now they (Politicians) throw billions and billions at the ones that threw billions away in the first place to receive insane bonuses. Now we have to pay it, most likely through massive Inflation (printing money like there is no tomorrow), especially in the USA. The only hope is that the USA has enough international pull, so that the lending countries let the USA slowly collapse, while other countries become the new power houses. (Preferably not led by Osama Bin Laden......;-)

Of course I hope that Canada will not become a "takeover" target, in this international globalization trend to make power brokers even richer.

I wish that the present economy would still be thinking and using Billions which is low compared to the Trillions and Zillions President Obama is hoping to spend that would change the face of the USA as we know it today. I believe were not far away from having to spend $10.00 for a loaf for white bread with no grains added. And, of course this could lead to a major food crisis around the World. The first signs showed when were already paying high prices for Bulk Rice product. How about toothpaste priced at $12.00 a tube? Isn't this the price already being charged by some Network Marketing companies?

I believe the problem was created eons ago when the USA and other western nations removed the gold standard from their currencies. Without the gold standard, currencies are only paper and have no real value, hence the cost of a given item or product can be whatever the currency is pegged at. I remember years ago when I was doing business in Brazil, their currency was devalued constantly and became almost worthless. If you left the country with $100.00 in their currency and came back a month later, their currency only had 50 or 75 dollar value and the longer you stayed away the more it devalued until it had no value to speak of. Likewise, without a gold standard, eventually we could be paying ridiculous amounts for items such as a loaf of bread. Our currency really means nothing without a gold standard and can be easily manipulated by powers that be if it suits their agendas.

The true value of a company, country, world is in its people. We have lost sight of this and now the dollar has replaced it temporarily and has made consuming the power driving our wild growth. Even growth has limits no matter what standard we use. The peak will be past and we will be sliding down the other side; speed is the scary factor and hopefully it will be slow.
No one but God knows tomorrow and it is a good thing we don't........:)

Hi Annie,
Crazy times we are livin in. Seems power attitude is consuming our leaders and we are being left in the dust. On the positive side, we do live in a very well off and apparently well run society compared to the rest of the world. I do agree that our celebrations may be short lived if we dont get spending under control..... for everyone.
The US is talking about trillion dollar deficits. If billions are mind boggling what is trillions of dollars?
Okay, I'm going to try this again--it seems to me that we're all pretty good about complaining about politicians and the economy and society and how it's not working and how bad things are...having said that, what do we do--we write (mostly) intelligent comments in a forum.....So here goes my "solution". First, I voted for those politicians, I got them in, I can get them out--if I don't like the job they're doing then it's my responsibility to change that, no voting for the "news clip", no voting for the "party line", find out the agenda, fix the agenda or make my own--get involved, nothing's ever fixed by standing on the sidelines pointing fingers--
Society sucks and the economy's in the crapper--my fault--I'm the one that drives (yep folks drives) to the specialty grocery store, buys "organic" meat in a plastic bag, drives home and cooks and eats all of it--that little exercise (which I repeat with slight variations on a daily basis) uses more resources, enables me to consume more calories than a family of four in Haiti uses in a year--Do you want to see petty, greedy, consumerism at it's best--look right here! We've created this society, we've made this economy -- we want too much and we want it at any price--The answer to this? Don't know--anyone have any suggestions? For me, I'm looking at what I'm doing--do I need it or do I just want it? how much does it cost--not just money but the total cost? what's important and what's window dressing, and finally what's my value as a human being--something tells me having more stuff to send to the landfil isn't it.
I grew up in the 60's, I was going to change the world--guess I did and don't like the way I changed it--so I'm going to do it again, I'm going to need help--do you know how?
