Every Breath You Take

I am forming this support group that will deal specifically with lung-related illnesses; I think our generation smoked a whole lot. I suffered from severe Emphysema. Oct.30th marks 1 year I received a life-saving double-lung transplant. Let's talk.

I notice there haven't been any posts for over a year, but I still thought anyone who is still trying to quit might be interested to know St. Michael's Hospital in conjunction with CAMH has a Quit Smoking Program that has an orientation and meetings afterward.  It also provides up to a year's worth of free stop smoking medicines of your choice.  I am picking up mine tomorrow.

Hi! I'll turn 65 on May 31st and have been smoking for over 50 years. I've been diagnosed with the start of emphysema and I KNOW I have to quit, but, haven't been able to. I can't understand why I'm not able to just make up my mind and quit, but so far.....

I am severely psychologically addicted and as is often said, "It's been my only friend through all these years!". I found out when I was about 40 that I'm allergic to the smoke so I fill up with phlegm and cough violently, more and more these last few years. Lately, I even feel the loss of oxygen! You'd think that'd be enough to get me to quit, but uh-uh.

I've said for a long time that they'd have to put me in straight jacket in a padded room and leave me there for me to be able to quit!

I've never know anyone who had severe emphysema so maybe by joining this group and actually having someone explain to me how horrible it gets, it might motivate me to do "it". Help Melody!

The doctor has just prescribed a nasal spray to ease congestion - Rhinocort Aqua. 1 spray in each nostril twice a day. It seems to be working to relieve the congestion in my head and throat already.

I'm finding the Alvesco recommended by the lung association is working much better than to puffers prescribed by the hospital - Spiriva and Advair - and it doesn't wreck my vocal cords like the others did. It is also much simpler to use - no capsules and stuff like that. One is good for one month.

Coffee and cigarettes were so tied together that in order to quit, I had to stop drinking coffee and switched to tea. Also drank milk; you cannot smoke a cigarette while drinking milk! It just doesn't go! I also had the habit of picking up a cigarette whenever the phone rang. So, I removed the cigarettes from my desk, putting them out of reach. Once I got over smoking for a week, I was free and clear and was not bothered by withdrawals or anything. I think it is more a case of mind over matter. You just make up your mind to forget about it.

Hello. I quit smoking in 1984 (began at 16 due to friends influence in the late 40s). Two years ago while in hospital for PE, I was diagnosed at being COPD. I was prescribed Spiriva once a day and a 2nd one for twice a day. They were ruining my vocal cords and it was becoming more and more difficult to speak. I quit the twice a day one, and tried the Spiriva for a while but that didn't help much so I quit using them at all. I had my doubts about the diagnosis because I hadn't smoked for years, and it seemed like advertising for meds.

At the Zommer's show, I visited the lung disease booth where I was advised to switch to Alvesco. I also picked up their booklet and learned that COPD included bronchitis! Well, if I'd been told bronchitis in the first place, I'd have understood that. I know I've had a problem with bronchitis since childhood. I've begun using the Alvesco and so far it hasn't agravated the problems with my voice.
Anyone else have a problem with vocal chords from puffers?

Has anyone using prednisone, had any reactions. I was put on high doses of prednisone after my last bout of asthma/copd last October. I finished my prednisone in November. My skin became very thin and I get skin tears very easily and bruising under the skin on my forearms. I look like I have been in a bad accident. I was asked if I had a fall by one lady. The Dr. says there is nothing that will make it go away because my skin is so thin. Even just turning over in bed will cause another bruise. I have tried creams, potions and lotions, and nothing works. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks!!
