Without a doubt the most complete entertainer of all time.  His audience always came first.

As you might know, Betty Garrett was married to Larry Parks that handsome fellow who played the role of Jolson in two bio films on his life. I thought this video is a lovely reminder of them both. Here Betty is now 90 but still doing well. I noticed that their two sons really resembled their father in good looks too!

I am new to this site and, scrolling through the groups, this one jumped out at me. I was about 5 years old and we lived in a two room suite on the poor side of Vancouver. My Dad was a towboat captain before unions and made a poor wage. Housing was at a premium and most nice places wouldn't take kids. When Dad was out of town, I used to sleep with my Mom in the big bed. She would read in bed and listen to Jack Cullen and the Owl Prowl on the radio. I loved listening to the music as I fell asleep. One night, Jack announced that Jolson was dead and played nothing but Jolson through the night. I'll never forget that night and have loved his music ever since. But, the greatest entertainer of the 20th century, to me, will always be Little Miss Jolson, Judy Garland.

I was just a kid who went to the movies every Saturday usually with my older brother. We'd pack a lunch in brown paper bag, arrive at noontime for an hour of cartoons and settle into two feature films. For the Jolson movies I'd stay late into early evening to see it all over again and remember tallying up some 24 or so times I'd seen the first film. I used to have a song book and wrote down the lyrics; would have a little sesson of singing them and got fairly good at it. Those were the days before shyness set in. ;-)
