The winter of 1926/27 was a very harsh one & in the summer of /26 three Englishmen hiked into a remote area of the NWT's and built a crude log cabin.Unable to carry a full supply of food they were counting on local game to survive. The weather caused an unusual scarcity of game and the caribou which normally migrated through their area changed their route that year. One by one they succumbed to starvation and perished!

Just ahead of the limited theatrical release of Barney's Version, based on the book by the late Mordecai Richler, comes a new documentary airing this month on Bravo. Titled Mordecai Richler: The Last of the Wild Jews, the film by Montreal filmmaker/journalist Francine Pelletier takes its title from a term coined by Russian Jewish writer Isaac Babel in his tales of the Jewish underworld in Odessa - tales that inspired a young Richler.

For those of you interested in the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, this is a neat link - to Canadiana...it has videos showing the Queen, long-gone politicians, and all the activities you associate with the CNE - http://www.youtube.com/CNEArchives#p/u/27/j4Bsy-e5Sz0

A few days ago I posted a comment about Dr. John Gerald Fitzgerald, founder of the Connaught Labs. Last night his grandson James Fitzgerald received the $25,000 Rogers Writers Trust non-fiction award for his book "What Disturbs Our Blood", an account of "Gerry's" life and work.
