Did Laugh-In get Tricky Dick elected?

Apparently so! Been reading this lengthy article examining the relationship between Richard Nixon and Laugh-In's head writer, Paul Keyes.

Keyes was responsible for writing Nixon's "sock it to…

What Defines You?

I attended the Zoomers trade show in Vancouver on the weekend. We arrived mid afternoon on Sunday (Grey Cup day I'm told) so attendance was down. The good news was we were able to chat with the folks in the vendor booths.

It was an interesting cross section of booths; everything from a giant pink colon to travel companies and everything in between. The entertainment was oldies (appropriate I guess) .

WAIT .. I felt a bit out of place .. I'm not "old" .. my body lets me know… Continue

Creating Satisfying Holidays When You’re Alone

While everyone else (or so it seems) is happily enjoying his or her extended family, you may find yourself alone during the holidays. You may be widowed, divorced or estranged from family members. Or maybe your relatives and offspring live too far away to visit. Whatever the reason, some of us will find ourselves facing the holidays stripped of the security net provided by our daily routines.

Although it would be easy to sink into self-pity, self-care is more appropriate. Here are… Continue

MEXICO

Last week I received two emails (Zoomers&50Plus) spelling out the wonders of Mexico. According to the emails this was the most wonderfull place on earth and we should all visit there. There was no mention of the problems in Mexico such as the drugs, violence and other not so very nice things that go on there. I found it alarming that these biased writings would come from These two sources.

When December comes

I really love the song by Green Day, not sure of all the words but I know somebody will know them and chime in...part of it is "when September comes..." and he's referring to change/process/life moments. It's a lovely song I think. I notice that, as I move closer to my "winter" years the time seems to shift so very quickly. I was told that would happen by my elders but I didn't believe them: silly me.

So now, as we begin our decent into December, I have a few things on my mind I'd…

Is religion a force for good or ill?

Last Friday in Toronto, Tony Blair made the most extensive comments of his career on religion against atheist writer Christopher Hitchens, who is currently suffering from terminal cancer.

I just posted the first clip in the videos, but though to post all the clips together for us to look at and discuss further. If anyone 'won'…

JFK

For Valerie

I too remember sitting in my grade 9 class room and my French teacher Mr Theodore announcing that JFK had just been shot. It was 2:10pm exactly on the school clocks EST. None of us could believe it had happened until a live broadcast came on over the PA system.

A very sad day and there were many tears in the school's corridors. Returning to a classmate's home after school, I discovered that even adults shed tears! A very emotional day indeed…

Globe and Mail article states low income seniors to lose payments

This morning I read the Globe and Mail's front page article which starts out saying "low income Canadian seniors could be driven into poverty next summer when they find out Ottawa has cut their federal income support. Some are poised to lose a key part of their monthly income because of a new policy approved by the federal government without public notice. The rules change the way lump-sum withdrawals from RRIF's affect GIS payments. Across the country low income seniors will be affected if…

5 Longevity Anthems: The 'Harder Than Nails' Edition

Age, aging & longevity — here at Zoomers, we often toss these terms off in tandem with health statistics or 'You know you're getting old when...' laugh-out-loud jokes.

Who cares about age?

Sometimes, I like to read the fashion magazines. Wait — let me correct myself. I like to flip through the pages of those over-sized glossies when I'm standing in the book store's news stand section, and more often then not, putting them back on the shelf. Can't afford the designer rags, and don't necessarily identify with those air-brushed editorials of women barely in their 20s.… Continue
