My pet peeve has to do with scooter folk. I mean, c'mon - the worst part is these people spend too much time trying to 'look cool' and none whatsoever considering safe riding gear.

Let me explain, the worst scooter incident I saw was right in front of my office in downtown Toronto.

This young girl in a lovely flowing skirt caught my attention at the intersection of Queen and Victoria streets.

I said to myself, "That girl is crazy. Her skirt is going to get caught on something and come right off or she's going to have an accident and end up covered in road rash, or something bad."

So anyway - there she was, signalling her left turn at the set of lights, looking like Jackie O in a fashion magazine shoot for Vespa. Her outfit matched the scooter and everything.

Sure enough, the lights turns green and around the corner she goes... right into the path of a turning street car!!!

Ok, ok - before you call me harsh or insensitive - she was fine.

She didn't leave room when turning to account for her wide mirrors.

The mirror made contact with the streetcar and nudged her off balance.

She braked, lost control and laid down the scooter.

It all ended with the scooter girl on her back - feet in the sky, with her flowing skirt over her head.

It was pitiful.

Safe to say she learned her lesson. I hope she wears jeans and leather next time she rides.

Even in summer.

hehehe...i can chuckle because i'm a former vespa owner (until it was stolen last spring). i agree downtown toronto is full of scooter fashionistas (bikes too) but u can't beat the insurance ($250-$500 annually) and fuel ($5 every 2 weeks for daily, inner-city commuting).

i'd love to post this blog entry in a few scooter community sites if u don't mind. :-)
