Well now they've done it now! There are things you just don't mess around with in Canada. Hockey, Poutine and Anne of Green Gables. The publisher of my book, CreateSpace (Amazon) decided to portray a new version of Anne of Green Gables that looks similar to the cast of The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars. Slim-fitting plaid shirt with surfer blonde hair and a 'come hither ' look did not impress the Canadian readers of the beloved series. Scathing comments hit the internet like a communicable disease:
"What is up with the bedroom eyes? Did they just do a Google image search for Sexy Farm girl? Does anyone publishing this book have any idea of what the stories are actually about?
Ugh, so disappointing. Please buy Anne of Green Gables! But please don't buy this stupid version! KEEP ANNE GINGER!"
"Anne is a REDHEAD, to begin with. And a young person, not the sexpot portrayed on the cover here."
"This is nuts, offensive even. That cover image has to be a joke
I love Anne of Green Gables, but that cover is truly loathsome. I hope the publisher doesn't sell a single copy of this craptacular cover. Shame on them!"
"The cover is an insult to the author, the story and Canadians. Please remove this travesty from your website. Disgusting. I cannot believe you made my beloved Anne, a BLONDE farm girl pin-up."
"Obviously, you have never read the books. Anne is a red-head. And a young, naive girl. Not a blond trampy valley girl"
"Obviously this publisher has chosen a photo of a busty blonde with bedroom eyes with the express purpose of trying to sell this edition to a population of sex starved males."
I agree- Anne has red hair not Sweet Valley High blonde and this is critical to the story. If Anne had showed up at Green Gables looking like this, Marilla would have thrown her out with the bath water.
Anne would never wear her hair down or wear an Abercrombie knock-off flannel shirt. I am seriously wondering if the story is different than the original series of books?
I think that the story in this particular edition has Anne going through some personal trauma. She experiences abandonment and bulimia only to dye her hair blonde, don a plaid shirt and becomes the town 'jezebel" of Avonlea in “Anne of the Island” Did she end up becoming a model for Harlequin book covers only to have Fabio rip off her bodice and live a life of debauchery? I guess we will always wonder what went through this publishers mind when they came up with this cover.
So exactly who is the sexed-up tart on the cover?
Surely anyone who had a heart and half a brain would not have messed with tradition. As Anne once said in Anne of Green Gables-"when you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worth while,” not a Farmer's Daughter waiting for some traveling salesman.

Comment by Christine Geery on February 6, 2013 at 8:57pm This is beyond disgusting. We still watch the Anne (with an e) at least once a year. What do they think they're doing? I'm ashamed of them to say the least.
