No Country for Old Bridesmaids Dresses - The Sequel

Once upon a time when my late sister decided to get married the scary question came up that a lot of women dread.

"Would I be her bridesmaid" she asked?

Having had a rocky relationship for many years with her due to my father, I really wanted to do this to mend fences. She told me to pick out a few ideas and we would go over them.

Not being a conservative dresser I was very careful to pick out a simple dress so as not to aggrivate anyone. After a long discussion we both agreed on a satin sleeveless dress with a matching shawl. She was pleased and I was relieved, so I bought the fabric to make the dress.

One month before the wedding my stepmother put in her 4.5 cents and decided the bridesmaids should be sporting yellow floral hippie dresses. She also insisted that I had to wear the same dress and a loud argument began.

I have natural blonde hair, glow in the dark alabaster skin and yellow is not flattering on me. I asked my sister if there was any possibility of changing the dress since they had changed the bridesmaid dresses many times. She stated that my stepmother wanted these styles and there was no way she was going to argue with her.

If I could now change what happened after that phone call I would in a split second. Linda would have stayed quiet, wore the darn dress and ripped it off as soon as she could. But because my stepmother only tolerated me because of my father, WWIII began. I told my sister I should have some say and she suddenly became silent on the phone.  In a rage I told her with some choice words to find someone else. How awful was that?

That began the two years of silence with my family that did not end until my father became terminally ill. I seriously regret that decision to this day. When I got married the first time I let my sister and my best friend Sheila wear what they wanted. Sheila reciprocated when she got married allowing me do the same thing.

I have seen families almost kill each other over weddings. Former brides that shopped in my store used to argue with their bridesmaids all the time.  The brides were always assuring their bridal party that they would be able to wear their dresses after the wedding. Anyone that believes that also believes we are all going to die this year. How many ads do you see for used bridesmaid’s dresses in the classifieds?  Someone could really profit from creating a landfill site for those darn dresses and the ugly Christmas sweaters.

Jean Paul Gaultier once said,

“It's always the badly dressed people who are the most interesting.”

If that's the case, then bridesmaids must be the most interesting people in the whole world - hands down!

Vera Wang once said the vocabulary of a wedding was more than the day or the dress. It is a metaphor of women’s lives and their creativity. I must agree after seeing these dresses that creativity was running rampant in some of these choices. It was nothing but a wild white wedding day.

This blog is dedicated to Modern Family's Lily after this weeks episode. Oh %^&* !- that was one great episode!

The first wedding I when I was a bridesmaid had me in a gruesome backless green dress.

I had scars down my back from surgery and I was so humiliated walking down the aisle feeling like there was a spotlight on my back. I vowed to never have a wedding like that and I succeeded,in fact I refused to even go to weddings for a very long time.

Great story and photos.

I wish I had taken that advice a long time ago.. sigh.. She is long gone and we wasted a few years

I love this post. The photos are awesome and hilarious. (I actually like lime green!!!)

At my wedding my bridesmaids all wore what my sister wanted, not what I wanted, because she was overweight and didn't "feel good" in the flowery, flowing, hippie dresses I picked out. I tried telling my folks she could stuff it , and stay out of the wedding, but they reminded me they were paying.

She won, we survived, and reading your family story, I'm glad I gave in -- but from then  on I have told brides -- "Forget it. It isn't YOUR day at all -- it belongs to your mother. Live with it."  (and with the godawful bridesmaids' dresses she chooses because she never got to choose at her wedding -- and so it goes).

This works in at least 4 dimensions.

(1) Always a nice day for a white wedding, ahh the MTV era.

(2) Great family pictures. Your DILs are hautter than Hiroshima in August!

(3 )Awesome worst ever collection

(4) Makes me glad to be Male. In my family and social circle, a black tux or Parade Dress Uniform was always good enough.

These are so hideous and yet topped by the horrible (random?) dresses from Modern Family. I did think the reaction in the Church was unrealistic, but I am off topic now...

Great post as usual my friend!
