Once upon a time, public display of 'word' consisted of writing content in bathroom stalls or on walls. Sometimes walls could talk and gossip would get back to us later about who wrote what where and why. Our thoughts were written down in personal diaries or letters that were sent and kept in a box for posterity. Things were whispered and kept in private and only years down the road would you find out things you wish you would have known sooner.
Now the "wall" that everyone seems to talk about is the Facebook wall where everyone you really don’t know reads your inner thoughts and dreams on a daily basis. This wall says it is a place to post content to share with a broader audience. Would this same audience be allowed to read your diary years ago? So why are we sharing our life’s time line with total strangers?
People complain all the time that their privacy is being breached and threaten Facebook with lawsuits for exploiting their recent activity privacy. Well if they would stop putting up things they don’t want to be made public things would be okay. Where is the line drawn about what you post or what you read? I decided to post a few actual posts of "meaningful conversation" I read and see what you think. Should we go back to keeping things private?
I have Facebook, so I hope you have it too. :)
I am looking for cute fun girls who wants to be good friends and someone I can talk to when I’m bored or just feel like talking. We can start by maybe Facebooking or texting. Please be between like 25-32. I don't care where you live!
“21 m send me a Facebook link to add you- I’m real cool and new out here somebody get at me!”
“We went to High School together. We graduated in 1999...It’s weird you are one day older than me. During my entire time in High School you were the only girl I ever wanted. I see your posts on Facebook, and I know you are single. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever known. You were my first crush and will be my last love. I know where you live- can I come and see you?”
“Did you not see my post at 6:26 a.m? It was long before you even rolled your stoned lazy ass out of bed. I don't Tweet and Facebook and browse the internet during the day. That shit is reserved for government workers and middle management. You think those millions of Chinese workers assembling iPods, iPads and laptops are tweeting all day? No, they are working there asses off and driving our economy into extinction. Tweet me!!”
"Hello! I’m looking for a texting buddy- someone too help with the occasional boring times at work or school. Whatever it may be! Lol. I have Facebook too- umm. I’m hella random!"
“I am looking forward to a nice conversation with a nice, normal, sane woman who just wants to have a meandering conversation with a complete stranger. If nothing comes of it, no harm no foul!”
“I am a 33 year old white male. I am not the tallest man out there. I stand 5'6 and have an average body. I have a social worker and try to help people if I can. I only ask that if you are interested, please be my age or younger and of course....a woman. My ass is an exit only! Not that there is anything wrong with that!”
“If you would consider doing any of the following listed below during a date... please DO NOT RESPOND because your mother would be completely ashamed if you would do any of the following:
a-spending the majority of a date on your phone texting or talking
b-spitting in the elevator on a date
c-throwing your phone at the wall
d-rolling a joint on our first date(p.s. I don't smoke, anything)
e-leaving without saying anything because you realize you're not "getting any" after dinner
f-asking if I'll know you well enough by the second date...(to what?!?!)...lol
I'm also looking for some immediate entertainment since I'm stuck here at work. Text or Facebook me. Feel free to share my number with friends!
One things is for sure; none of these things would have been written on the walls of Boldt Castle! As Sarah Chalke once said: "Human beings are not meant to lose their anonymity and privacy." Nor their brains.

Images of the upper floor of Boldt Castle that has not been renovated yet. The walls contain hundreds of signatures and messages from 1960 on. It was called 'early texting'!
Boldt Castle is in the middle of the St. Lawrence Seaway on the American side facing Ontario.
