Who can forget the eyes of Canadian serial killer Karla Homolka? Homolka and her husband Paul Bernardo from Scarborough, Ontario dubbed “The Ken and Barbie Killers” were convicted in 1993 for the rape and murder of Kristen French, Leslie Mahaffy and Homolka's own sister Tammy Homolka.
Bernardo was sentenced to life but his wife Karla offered a plea deal and as Canadians say "got away with murder”. Videotapes of the gruesome killings finally surfaced from a camera inside their bathroom ceiling light where Bernado had advised police to look. His wife, however, had already given the crown enough information that her plea deal could not be broken. It was later learned that Homolka was not the victim she claimed to be and had fully participated in the rapes, tortures and murders of the young girls. Still considered the most despised woman in Canada, Homolka served only 12 years instead of life in prison.
Last week struggling Canadian porn actor Luka Rocco Magnotta was finally arrested for the murder and dismemberment of Canadian University student Lin Jun. Unlike the case of Bernardo and Homolka, digital footprints helped find him quicker than the Ken and Barbie Killers. Immediately rumours circulated that Magnotta had once dated Karla Homolka in 2007. Was he as guilty as sin for being affiliated with Homolka or were the rumours in the media the sin?
Toronto Sun writer Joe Warmington interviewed Magnotta in 2007 after stories escalated and then concluded that Luka had no connection to Homolka but he was the creepiest person Warmington had ever interviewed. According to the Toronto Sun Warmington said:
“You spend 10 seconds with him and you easily come to the conclusion it’s all in his own head and all for attention.”
Apparently Magnotta said he was getting death threats because he was wrongly linked to Homolka and gave an interview to The Montreal Gazette saying,
“My whole career (as a model and adult film star) are going downhill…Nobody wants to talk to me — I don’t have anybody basically. Whoever is doing this, please stop, you’re doing a lot of harm.”
But was Luca really concerned about his career, or just seeking more attention?
In 1982 Luka Rocco Magnotta, was born Eric Clinton Newman and had hundreds of aliases that he used on YouTube and social media to promote himself. Attempting miserably to become a porn star he appeared in 8 D-List videos distributed by StreetBait.com. Around December of 2010, in his quest for notoriety he began uploading videos of himself murdering and violating cats in the same fashion as he was featured on bestgore.com with his human victim Lin Jun.
After concerned citizens discovered the photographs and videos online a Facebook group was created to try to identify the criminal and eventually Luka Rocco Magnotta was named as the videographer. Immediately people got involved and asked the public to help.
If you have any information about the whereabouts of Luka Magnotta please contact The OSPCA 888-668-7722, The Sun Newspaper UK 020 7782 4104, or The RSPCA - UK 0300 1234 999
There is a reward of over $5000 available for information that results in his conviction for these crimes.
It seems in his delight of being dubbed “the kitten vacuumer” he threatened to kill again and escalate to humans. Magnotta began to create a bigger than life persona of himself as a serial killer by allegedly editing Karla Homolka's Wikipedia page and replacing the name of Homolka's husband Thierry Bordelais with his own. Homolka, after being released from prison, ended up marrying her lawyer's brother Thierry and in 2007 took up residence in the French Antilles selling eco-friendly products.
Rumours have circulated that the two did actually meet sometime in Montreal through Richer Lapointe, the man who gave Karla Homolka a job at his hardware store when she was released from prison. Magnotta, a student at the University of Montreal apparently was involved with her but Homolka broke it off quickly, worried about being caught by the media.
In June 19 of 2010 an article was published on the online version of the Denver Post/The Hub called: Karla Homolka and Luka Magnotta: Life After Murder. The Post reported that according to a french newspaper Karla Homolka was living with her partner porn model Luka Magnotta and had a four year old son Damien.
I questioned whether Magnotta had someone plant the story or if the article had been tampered with but was assured that it was a very difficult thing to do. Had they really been involved or was Luka simply trying to attract her attention?
I guess we will never know as Magnotta was arrested in a cyber cafe bar in Berlin last week and a Canadian news headline sourced by "speed first, and accuracy second" claimed that indeed Magnotta and Homolka had been an item. The next day in an attempt to clean up their act with no proof the Montreal police backtracked and said,
"It was reported this week that Magnotta had dated Karla Homolka, one of Canada’s most notorious sex killers. Police officials clarified that they were aware of the many rumours posted on the Internet, but had no proof to substantiate those stories. In 2007, Magnotta came forward to news media to deny that he had dated her, although many at the time suggested he was the one who started the rumours to gain attention.”
Was that true?
In 2009 Magnotta, the killer of Lin Jun wrote an article called How to Completely Disappear and Never Be Found, which was a six-step program on how to escape and leave your identity behind.
Had he done that very same thing at one point in his life? Luka Rocco Magnotta and Karla Homolka were in Montreal simultaneously for a small period of time but had they really hooked up?
It is extremely hard to dispute that Luka as a fellow serial killer had extreme admiration for Homolka and their shared love of dismemberment and torture. A noted serial killer once said his only joy in life was when he killed someone and felt empathy to others with the same love.
Do we assume Luka was hero worshipping Homolka or was reporter Warmington's conclusion correct; that it was simply all in Magnotta's head and just for attention.
What would have happened if Magnotta had teamed up with Karla Homolka as she once did with her husband Paul Bernardo? Would the two have become one unstoppable killer monster?
For many years Luka created numerous Wikipedia pages for himself only to have them constantly removed by their editors. The serial killer will probably be pleased to know he now has his very own page which will never disappear. Sick world, isn't it when you feel your only claim to personal fame in this life is killing other living things.

Comment by Linda Seccaspina on June 11, 2012 at 11:43am I agree Werner.. ya have to admit.. Our crime is lower than the US but hell we have some classic ones here between barbie and ken and the pig killer
Comment by Werner on June 11, 2012 at 11:38am Lets just say that if on his way back to Canada, he "accidently" gets sucked out of the plane, say in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere, I would not be concerned.
